Swedish rider blazes the trail in Ride America

January 18, 2011

You don’t need to be American to take part in a great American pastime. You don’t even need to be
in North America. All you need is an American Paint Horse to do it with. Just ask Swedish rider Ann-Sofie
Östberg, the leading international participant in the APHA’s Ride America® program. In June 2010, she
attained the 2,500-hour award level with her black tobiano gelding, Flashing Rocket LB.

Sweden's Ann-Sofie Östberg and
Flashing Rocket LB have logged 2,500
hours together in the APHA's Ride
America program and are aiming much,
much higher.

Ann-Sofie, who lives in Gävle, on the east coast of Sweden about two hours north of Stockholm,
purchased “Rocky,” her first Paint Horse, in 2001 when he was just a weanling. Shortly after she
started riding him, Ann-Sofie joined Ride America and started tracking the hours she spent in the
saddle.

“I read about the program at apha.com and I thought it sounded interesting,” said Ann-Sofie. “I joined
the program since it was a fun way to get some rewards to my horse.” The duo reached the 100-hour
level in July 2004 and haven’t stopped since.

A lecturer at the University of Gävle, Ann-Sofie, 36, rides nearly every day. “My favorite place to ride
depends on the mood of the horse. Sometimes we go on a wonderful trail ride and sometimes we stay
in the arena. I ride just as much during the winter as during summer. Since I live in Sweden we have a
lot of snow during winter, and it is so peaceful riding in the forest when everything is white and quiet.
I really love it!”

All the hours spent together have built a strong bond between the pair. “Rocky is a very kind-hearted
horse, and he loves to be the center of attention,” she said. “If he could, he would be sitting in my lap as
a pet dog does. He is a one-of-a-kind horse with a lot of personality.”

The APHA’s recreational riding program turned out to be a perfect fit for this trail-loving duo.
“To earn rewards just spending time with your horse is wonderful,” said Ann-Sofie. “My future goal with Rocky is
to enjoy and have fun spending time with him, and my goal with the Ride America program is to reach
10,000 hours.”

If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to spend more time in the saddle, Ann-Sofie has a few words
of advice. “Keep track of the hours you spend in the saddle or driving your horse. It is a really good way
to see how much time you spend with your horse,” she said.

“Try to get together with other horses and riders and go for trail rides or training at the arena together.
And the most important thing of them all is to remember to have fun and enjoy every moment you
spend together with your horse.”

Ann-Sofie and Rocky are not the only international participants in Ride America—you can see all the
